Om Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya dhimahi

– RigVeda
Meaning
We meditate upon the auspicious, godly light of the Lord Sun; may that heavenly light illumine the thought-flow in our intellect.
– By Swami Chinmayananda.
The proper mantra contains only the last three lines as below.
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya dhimahi
Dhiyo yo nah pracodayaat
tat – that
Savitur – Savitri, the sun God
Varenyam – Auspicious
Bhargo – Lustre
Devasya – Godly
Dhimahi – We meditate upon
Dhiyo – Intellect
Yo – He who
Nah – Our
pracodayaat – May he illumine
The godly light of the sun can be interpreted as the light of consciousness, the infinite and the absolute. The first line invokes the three worlds Bhur, Bhuvar and Swar. Anybody who chants this mantra with fervor during morning and evening time when the sun rises and sun sets will purify their minds and cleanse off all sins of the mind.
